The Perrin Techniquetm was developed following a discovery in 1989 during the clinical practice of Manchester osteopath Raymond Perrin. This osteopathic system of manual treatment alleviates many of the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) known in the UK as CFS/ME. The effectiveness of this manual approach was tested using two separate clinical trials. The first examined the change in the symptoms following a year of treatment. The second repeated the first study and examined the possible mechanisms of the improvement. The studies were designed to develop a greater understanding of the disorder, for which there is much scientific uncertainty regarding the cause, diagnosis and treatment.

Phase 1 of the research trials was completed nine years ago and was reported throughout the worlds press. It included self-report questionnaires to examine overall symptom change. With post-exercise fatigue being a major symptom of CFS/ME, the treatment protocol was shown to improve muscle function which was analysed utilising isometric testing of the knee extensor muscles measuring the impulse torque.

Raymond has now completed the second stage of his research examining the processes that may lead to this severely debilitating disorder.

The second trial, which included the same self report questionnaires assessing symptom relief as in the initial trial, was divided into two parallel phases. One primarily took the form of brain analysis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to confirm if brain abnormalities seen in previous research were found in sufferers of CFS/ME. No cerebral abnormality was detected in the patient group. Central lymph scans were also carried out showing a possible trend of enlargement in CFS/ME sufferers. In the other part, isometric tests were repeated with more accurate equipment than in phase 1. Muscle fatigue was measured using a KINCOM dynamometer and surface electromyography.

Overall this study has provided strong evidence that an important component of CFS/ME involves a disturbance of lymphatic drainage of the brain and muscles. The novel osteopathic treatment developed by Raymond Perrin has been statistically validated in both clinical trials, emphasising the need to focus future research on the biomechanical aspects of this disorder. Together with Neurobiologist Dr Vic Pentreath, Bioengineer Prof. Jim Richards at the University of Salford in conjunction with Neuroradiologist Professor Alan Jackson and his team at the University of Manchester, Raymond has expanded our knowledge of CFS/ME, which has recently led to a doctorate awarded by the University of Salford

The Perrin Techniquetm, the method of diagnosing and treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) was developed through the aforementioned research. It is best if used by or under the supervision of a Licensed Affiliate of the Perrin Clinic Limited.

Dr Perrin has groundbreaking photographic evidence of varicose lymphatic vessels taken during a research project at Salford University which shows for the first time the “backflow” of lymphatic drainage that he believes is the cause of toxin build-up.

And it is this accumulation of toxins in the central nervous system, which Dr Perrin believes is the cause of conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome and ME.

Valves

Dr Perrin, who runs clinics in Prestwich, central Manchester and London, said: “Normally these vessels are the size of the thinnest pencil line and you can’t usually see them without a magnifying glass, but the fact they are swollen like this is significant. There is a backflow against the valves.

“Very rarely can you see these, but with every person I have seen in the last 16 years with chronic fatigue syndrome you can feel them under the surface. It means this person has had ME for a number of years.”

Until now experts have believed that valves in the lymphatic vessels only allowed the flow of fluids in one direction. But Dr Perrin says these varicose lymphatic vessels – which resemble varicose veins but are the same colour of the skin instead of a bluish colour – are the proof that the backflow exists, when vessels are damaged, allowing toxins to concentrate in the central nervous system.

He revealed the picture at a seminar at Salford University in August 2005.

In fact I am a year older than I was the last time I posted. It’s been very busy in the clinic here in Dublin and I have been working over in the UK 2 days per week since February this year. Back in Nottingham at the the Carats Clinic in Beeston. This is a great clinic run by Debbie. She is very kind and caring and runs her school from the clinic as well. I went there because I hold a licence to practice the Perrin technique for ME / CFS both in Nottingham and Dublin. the perrin technique is now ranked 3 as best cure for ME / CFS. It’s irene’s birthday tomorrow as well .

Bye Andy

It’s been to long since my last post. Since then lots has happened. The last time I wrote on my blog I was just starting the Cranial course in London. Since finishing that I have done lots of things including gaining my Licence form Dr R Perrin, to treat people with ME/CFS using his treatment plan the Perrin Technique.

I had the great pleasure of addressing the ME Trust in Dublin yesterday Saturday 8th May 2010, on the subject of the Perrin technique and its approach to the treatment of ME/CFS. A system that has been tried and tested over the last 25 years.

I was greeted at the venue by Declan Carroll of the ME Trust who had very kindley organised everything for me for the meeting at Carmichael House. The staff of Carmichael House were great and had prepared everything for me well in advance of my arrival.

I was able to share my personal experiences of ME/CFS, which my son Daniel had suffered from very severely between the ages of 19 and 31. He first consulted DR Raymond Perrin at the age of 31 and was helped to almost total recovery in the last year since his first consultation with Dr Perrin.

This is still a work in progress.

I explained the methods of treatment employed by the Perrin technique and my experiences as a licensed practitioner of the technique both here in Dublin and in Nottingham in the UK. I work in Dublin on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and Nottingham on Thursday and Friday every week. Which for me means lots of flying with Ryanair.

Lots of people came to the talk and participated well asking lots of questions about the Perrin technique, its hypothesis, results and methods of treatment. We had a good two and three quarter hours together at the end of which three quarters of the people attending this Perrin technique seminar with me, made appointments for an initial consultation and treatment. Which the ME trust very kindly agreed to sponsor.

I look forward to working with every one that I possibly can that has ME/CFS both in Dublin and Nottingham and helping them to reach their desired outcome.

The Hotel the course was in the Royal National. It looked OK from the out side but from my experience of this first day the toilets in the reception area left a lot to be desired. To say the least they were filthy, every time I went in to use them.

The course however was very good. I really did enjoy it an learned a lot from it. The people were very nice and the trainers first rate.

I did not have a bad nights sleep here at Jurys at Heathrow last night but it is very loud around my room tonight. The cleaners keep going in and out of their room which is near to mine and they are not quiet about it. also the lifts are straight across fom me and there is a lot of comming and going there. With lots of yelling and shouting. So I will have to see how the night goes tonight.

In my quest to be able to bring the best possible treatments to my client’s at the Willows clinic, I have come to London on the first part of the Up ledger course in Cranial sacral therapy.

I arrived at Heathrow airport at 8.30pm to night 26/11/09. I had to wait for 50 for the shuttle bus to my hotel the Jury’s inn Heathrow. Not very good on a very cold night.

Once I arrived at the hotel I had a wait at the Hotel reception. Never a good sign when the person on reception is talking on the phone but did not even acknowledge you are there. However the Hotel it’s self is very nice down stairs. The Room is very pain but clean. With Internet access and at a very reasonable price & TV. A very clean if simple bathroom.

I went to the restaurant for something to eat it was a buffet style 3-course meal for just over £11. How ever when I went to look at it the buffet looked to me like the food had been there for a long time and that it was very badly presented. It looked congealed. The staff in there was very nice though. I went to the bar and had a bar snack from there. Once again the staff were very nice and the food was fine.

We will see how the night goes and in the morning I need to be up for 5.30 to go to the Royal International hotel in the centre of London where my course is being held. Unfortunately I could not get a room there or in the vicinity so I have a 60 min tube ride to come.

But things just did not work out quite as Planed. Poor Sharon was kept waiting all day at the City Hospital Nottingham. But her C section did not go ahead, as the theater ran out of time. So poor girl was sent home to come back into the Hospital again this morning.

However success and Jacob arrived at 9.50am at the fine weight of 9lb 7.5oz. So granddad has got the chance to feed him and spend most of the day with him. Before I fly back to Ireland in the morning and back to John thornhills courseme chap.

It’s off to Dublin airport onto a Ryanair and over to Nottingham. So it will be good buy Willows Clinic and good buy irelandFIT.com until Saturday. Unfortunately it’s also bye bye Irene as she can’t come with me. But I will be in Nottingham and I will be ready.

Because by this time Thursday morning the gods willing little Jacob Smith will be born into the world. In my home town of Nottingham. Too my Son and daughter in law Sharon and Daniel. So Granddad Andy Smith (me) will have a new little pal to play with. Not that I don’t already have his big brother Evan to play with already.Of course this is not all new my Grand daughter Sophie came along four and a half years ago. she was followed 2 years later by Joel.

So granddad will have lots of little pals to play with. Then in true granddad style he will be able to hand them back and retreat to a place of safety!

I will keep you posted.

Well here we are again, another Friday and the week end starts here. It’s been a very busy Friday two clients this morning for Injury Treatment & Management. This afternoon food shopping until about 3pm. From then on working on my project for my first product through my work on John Thornhill’s Master Class. John Thorhill’s class has been excellent all the way through. I have learned so much about blog set up and everything else to do with making the blog look good. Now to making our own products under Johns watchful eye is a great experience.

I don’t know what your weekend is like, but mine is Saturday in the Willows Clinic doing lots of massages including a Hydrotherm Pregnancy Massage. I quite like doing these massages as they are carried out with the client lying on their back. On warm water mattresses with a lumbar support under their knees. A correctly sized opsipital support under their head. Putting them into the perfect anatomical position for maximum comfort in any stage of pregnancy. Then the whole body can be worked on using the Hydrotherm massage system without the client ever needing to turn over or even move. The whole routine is carefully worked out for early pregnancy through to full term. It is also very good for people with mobility problems. I will all being well be finished work by 4pm.

Then it’s showered changed out to friends for tea at a friend’s house. But we will need to be home by 11pm at the latest, because tomorrow we have a Market Stall at Fairyhouse race course Sunday market. Selling the body building products we provide through our website www.irelandFIT.com. We have to be there by 7.30am ready to set up so we will need to be up by 6am.

So I will tell you all about it on Sunday.

Hello

Well what a weekend here in Ireland the whole Lisbon treaty and its coming referendum was debated fiercely over dinner last night with a group of close friends. It raised some very interesting arguments for both sides. But the no side won at the table. The conversation then flowed naturally to the all Ireland GAA final championships which took place today between the counties of Kerry and Cork. The influx of people to the city of Dublin from the combatant’s home cities could only be compared to being like a plague of Locusts. The whole city was a wash with the colours of Green and yellow (Kerry) and red and white (Cork). The Guards (Irish police) struggled to control the sea of fans that were spilling all over the streets of the capital. Guards on horse back and cycles were doing their best to herd the supporters of the roads, to keep them and passing motorists safe.
The result of the game came as no surprise with Kerry wining their 5th all Ireland title in 10 years. They have won more all Ireland titles than any other county in Ireland. This is the reason that Kerry is known as the kingdom. It was a great day in Dublin and we as a family took off to take advantage of the wonderful sunshine and go to a market in the next county.
We rounded the day off with a nice Italian meal.

Hi Again

I am sorry it has been so long since the last time I posted anything up on my blog. But lots of things have been happening. I have been to weddings, 40th birthday parties and on Holliday to Malta. Now there’s a place I would not go again.(More on that another time).

First off we had a very busy week in the clinic leading up to my partner Irene’s brother’s weddings. I know what you are thinking weddings?!! Well on the Friday they had the civil ceremony at the registry office and me and me moait (Irish slang for female partner) went to her brothers place minded the kids and made a big, big buffet for everyone coming back from the registry office. Then we mucked in and helped feed everyone and wash up and do.
The next day we picked up Irene’s niece and we all went down into the country to a quaint little hotel that specialises in weddings. I think it was called the station house because it used to be a railway station once pone a time. A nice little touch is that the old signal box is converted into a suit for the bride and groom to spend the wedding night in. we had the family room because we looked after the kids from Irene’s brother’s previous marriage.
All in all it was a good do with another wedding ceremony carried out by a monk from the arse end of no where. This was all done in the grounds of the hotel. The bride was fashionably late just over the hour. We left early next day to get ready for our holiday to Malta.

This blocked most of my week for posting and John Thornhill’s course. But I am getting back on track now. It’s very interesting because we a re starting to produce our first product.

The story will continue later.
